Austria

Every operator of a motor vehicle (except motorcycles, scooters or mopeds) needs to carry a safety vest in their vehicle. The law came into effect on 1st May 2005. Quad bikes, tractors, trucks and micro cars are also affected. The safety vest should be reachable from the driver’s seat. The vest has to be worn when abandoning the car out of town in order to build up a safety triangle. It should also be worn when leaving the car after parking it on the highway or outside the official parking areas at motorway stations or gas stations.

Colour: You should use yellow safety vests when travelling in Austria.

Fine: Violations are punished by a fine of 14-36 EUR (approx.12-30 GBP). The fine has to be paid immediately in cash.

 

Belgium

The law in Belgium is not about carrying a safety vest in your car but about wearing it in case of leaving the vehicle out of town (e.g. in case of an accident). Affected are also motorcyclists. The law came into effect on 1st February 2007.

Colour: The safety waistcoat should be yellow.

Fine: If you do not carry a safety vest in your car you do not have to pay a fine. If you do not wear one when leaving the car the law is violated. This will be punished by a fine between 50 and 1375 EUR (approx. 40-1,170 GBP).

 

Bulgaria

Every person who is located on a road out of town needs to wear a safety vest.

Colour: You should choose a yellow safety vest in Bulgaria.

Fine: About 50 Leva have to be paid (approx.18 GBP)

Croatia

A safety vest should be worn after an accident or car breakdown out of town or on highways. Motorcyclists are also affected.

Colour: Yellow and orange safety vests are both accepted.

Fine: -

 

Czech Republic

There is also an obligation to carry and wear a safety vest in the Czech Republic. All drivers and passengers of cars do have to wear a safety vest when leaving the vehicle outside town.

Colour: You can choose between yellow safety vests and orange safety vests.

Fine: -

 

Finland

Drivers of all motorised vehicles have to wear safety vests or clothing with reflective characteristics when leaving the car after nightfall.

Colour: Yellow and orange safety vests are both accepted in Finland.

Fine: -

 

France

The safety vest has to be carried as well as worn when leaving the car in case of an accident or breakdown. The law came into effect on 1st July 2008.

Since 1st September 2008 all bicyclists have to wear a safety vests when cycling out of town at day and night and even in town in case of bad visibility conditions (e.g. bad weather).

Colour: The French only accept yellow safety vests.

Fine: Violating the law will cost about 90 EUR (approx. 75 GBP). Bicyclists violating the law will be punished by a fine of about 20 GBP when disobeying the law.

Since the 1st January 2013 motorcyclists also have to wear a safety vest (or reflective clothing) while driving. The French department for road safety dictates a minimum area of reflective elements of 150cm². The colour of those vests is not further specified. It should also be possible to use colourful reflective vests (e.g. black, red, blue etc.)

Hungary

Every pedestrian or bicyclist who is located on a road (outside town) needs to wear a safety vest. Of course every passenger of a car becomes a pedestrian too when he leaves the vehicle. That is why everyone who wants to secure a scene of accident automatically needs to wear a safety waistcoat.

Colour: yellow safety vest

Fine: Violating the law can cost up to 100 EUR (approx. 85 GBP)

Italy

Since the 1st April 2004 there is a law which stipulates that safety vests have to be worn when leaving the vehicle out of towns (e.g. in case of an accident or breakdown).  After an accident a safety triangle has to be built up. The person setting up the safety triangle needs to wear a safety vest. Motorcyclists are not affected by this law.

Since the 1st August 2010 all bicyclists have to wear a safety vest when cycling after dawn.

Colour: When travelling in Italy you should choose a yellow safety waistcoat.

Fine: If you do not carry a safety waistcoat in your vehicle you do not have to pay a fine. If you do not wear one when leaving the car when setting up a safety triangle, the law is violated. This will be punished by a fine of at least 41 EUR (at least 35 GBP).

  

Norway

A safety vest should be worn after an accident or car breakdown out of town or on highways. A safety vest should also be carried in the vehicle at all time and it should be easily reachable. The law came into effect on 1st March 2007. Only vehicles with Norwegian licence tag fall under this regulation. Motorcycles are not affected by the law.

Colour: Only yellow safety vests are accepted.

Fine: -

 

Portugal

A safety waistcoat has to be worn after a car accident or a car breakdown out of town or on motorways. A safety vest should be kept in the vehicle all the time. You should check your rental car for a safety vest before driving. The law came into effect on 25th June 2005.

Colour: Yellow safety waistcoats are accepted.

Fine: If you do not carry a safety vest in your car, you will be punished by a fine between 60 and 300 EUR (approx. 50 to 255 GBP). If you want to set up a warning triangle without wearing a safety vest, you will be punished by a fine between 120 and 600 EUR (approx. 100 to 500 GBP)

 

Slovakia 

Car passengers as well as motorcyclists have to wear a safety vest when leaving the vehicle outside town or walking on the motorway.

Colour: Yellow safety vests

Fine: Violating the law will be punished by a fine of approx. 50 EUR (approx. 40 GBP)

Spain

There is also an obligation to carry and wear a safety vest in Spain. The law already came into effect on 24th July 2004. Motorcyclists and bicyclists are not affected.

Colour: You need yellow safety vests in Spain.

Fine: If you do not wear a safety vest when leaving the car outside town you will punished by a fine of up to 100 EUR (approx. 85 GBP).
